Good article to read ... A heel-and-toe downshift refers to a specific technique used to downshift a manual transmission car. It might seem bizarre to the general populace, but racecar drivers use it all the time. Once mastered, the heel-and-toe downshift offers the benefits of reduced vehicle wear-and-tear, better driver control and faster lap times on a racetrack. ... www.edmunds.com/ownership/howto/articles/45792/article.html

u can't drift with a fwd car
the reason why u're drifting when u heel-toe is because u're driving a rwd car and when u accelerate, the back wheels are spinning

I do heel toe all the time to a) save the clutch from wearing during downshift, b) save the syncros from wearing out and c) driver & passenger comfort during downshift.

agree~~ what's the point of stepping the brake and at the same time stepping the gas?

it brings up the revs to match the speed u're going so that it doesn't wear out ur clutch and also helps u speed up faster coze u're in the right gear to go if u wanted to keep going after a turn or something

You heal and toe every corner motor racing and also double D clutch. Double clutching make shifts easier particularly on difficult gearboxes. ie. non syncromesh. Brakes are not there to stop the car but just to wash off enough speed to get through the corner. You spend most of your time with the accelerator pushed through the firewall.
If you want smoother gear shifts get a CVT - with no gear changes at all it doesn't get any smoother.
You can also use a similar simultaneous brake and accelerate technique on autos but why would you on the street unless needing to use evasive driving techniques.
