“Jazzin it up – Slammin it down low!”
Alpine has had a long standing reputation for new technology, sound quality and power. Traditionally Alpine demo vehicles have been spectacular installs and perfectly integrated delivering unprecedented sound quality, but they have never been able to demonstrate the raw output capabilities of Alpine’s high performance products. The Type-R Jazz has changed all of that with the aim of proving that Alpine products can hold their own but also outperform the best of them in the niche SPL arena. The Jazz was chosen because of its popularity in with the new generation, and because it’s a hit in Japan there are heaps of trick aftermarket parts available for it. When stacked up, the tower of Alpine audio to be installed in the Jazz tempted a number of amazed onlookers at Alpine HQ to comment: “How are you guys going to fit all that gear in such a small car!?!”
Looking Loud
The theme of the Type-R Jazz’s system is power. It’s important that the Jazz had to sound sweet and loud enough to be heard. It also had to be wild enough to create a huge visual impression to stand out. In short, the Jazz not only had to be loud – it had to look loud.
Techno Jazz
Showing off Alpine’s new technology – all of the latest hi-tech components were installed. Controlling the system is a CVA-1004R Mobile Media Station linked to a KCE-104V system expansion box giving an additional 4 Volt preouts and a/v inputs and of course cool graphic displays. Mounted in the glove-box is the DHA-S680E 6-Disc DVD Changer providing the convenience of selection of DVD entertainment and CD Audio.
Sharing the Double DIN space with the CVA-1004R is the coolest piece of audio technology released this year, Alpine’s new HDA-5460, Hard Disc Drive MP3/WMA/WAV Player. This revolutionary piece of equipment allows over 3000 songs to be saved onto the 16 Gigabyte HDD. Adding and updating the music collection is as easy as connecting the removable HDD to your computer and using the Alpine Mobile Media Driver software to manage your collection. The HDA-5460 is a fantastic addition to the system as it means no more swapping of CDs. All of your music can be programmed and there’s no risk of CDs being lost or damaged while searching for your desired tracks. The unit features Alpine’s BioLite display – which provides a great visual effect with moving graphics that dance around the screen in sync to the music. A unique, but very cool feature of the HDA-5460 is the virtual DJ. The DJ will queue up tracks from your favourite music genre and announce them. It’s just like your own private DJ in your car.
As all Honda Jazz owners know the audio system is integrated and the opportunity to upgrade to premium audio is impossible. Not True! It’s all good news, the Honda Fit (the Jazz’s Japanese twin) has a factory OEM navigation package that includes a double-DIN dash kit. The part was sourced from Japan by the guys at Evolution-R, and allowed us to turn an obscure dash, into something that easily accommodated CVA-1004R and HDA-5460 pairing with a seamless factory look.
Pushing into the Red
Copious amount of bass is provided by three Type-R 15” subwoofers. The fit of the three SWR-1541D’s is tight, but with great planning, careful placement and clever use of fibreglass, the Type-R Red themed fibreglass subwoofer install is a very impressive sight when the hatch is lifted.
The 148 litre common enclosure had to be strong to cope with the sheer brutality of the Type-R woofers. 18mm plywood was used, and to add strength three layers of fibreglass resin and matting were used. Then the box was strongly braced to minimise flex. This construction method allowed the box to be the optimum value for the three 15” subs, even in such a small area.
Each of these subwoofers is powered by a dedicated V12 AccuClass-D MRD-M1000 – Alpine’s 1000W RMS amplifier. The new AccuClass-D amplifiers are the world’s first true digital amplifiers and feature custom DSP processors that converts the analogue signal to digital at the input stage giving unprecedented control over the sound through all equalisation and processor stages. Combining 3000W RMS and three 15” subs with the small cabin area of the Jazz can only mean one thing – you can not only hear the music – you can also feel it through to the bone.
Emphasising the Top End
To keep up with all that bass – the front stage needed to be clear – but very loud! The team at Alpine decided to install a hybrid three way Type-R speaker setup. In each door is a SPR-176A 6-1/2” mid-bass driver, and on the dash a custom fibreglass pod in striking Type-R Red houses a SPR-136A 5 1/2” speaker set. This combination is powered by two V12 Series MRV-T420 two channel amplifiers. With 220W RMS on tap for each side of the front stage – there’s more than enough sound output to make sure the trio of 15” Type-R subs don’t totally dominate the sound. The SPR-176A’s are bandpassed between 80Hz up to 200Hz, and the SPR-136A’s are high passed at 200Hz and use the supplied passive crossover for the tweeters. Each rear door houses a SPR-174A 6 1/2” Coaxial and each speaker is powered off a bridged V12 Series MRV-T320 two channel amplifier high passed at 80Hz. The two MRV-T320’s are used to maintain the aesthetic balance of the install – as well as provide the rear fill with enormous amounts of headroom.
Honing the Internals
The interior theme was designed around a few Type-R trademarks – the striking red colour and the logo. The panels around all of the speakers in the car are all painted in the striking Type-R red, and the speakers in the doors also have components of the logo built into the trims. In contrast to the red of the speaker surrounds all of the panels surrounding the amplifiers and the dash facia were painted in silver to match the exterior of the car. The seats were re-trimmed in black perforated leather – and the bright red Type-R logo was embroidered into the back of the seat. Finishing the interior off is a Momo Top Power steering wheel with bright red leather inserts, a Momo Tomahawk red leather gear knob and a set of Momo Superturismo pedals to make the Jazz race ready.
For that extra wow factor, the amps are integrated into a new raised fibreglass floor of the vehicle – a MRV-T420 in both the drivers and passengers front floors, and the two MRV-T320s and one of the subwoofer’s MRD-M1000 across the back floor. The other two MRD-M1000’s are placed together and form a new custom parcel shelf behind the rear seats for great visual impact when the hatch is opened.
Audio Jazz’ery
As we all know – all of this equipment is useless without the proper power supply and cabling. Quality cabling from Stinger was used for all power and speaker interconnects. Stinger RCA Cables transfer the high quality audio signal from the CVA-1004R to the amplifiers. To cope with the increased power demand, two Optima Yellow Top batteries are integrated into the installation. To power the Jazz for displays, two $1,000 power supplies had to be sourced to keep up with demand. These supplies can provide up to 200 amps continuous to keep the Jazz at full volume all day!
Ground Effects
For the external styling – Evolution-R in Victoria was called upon to source a Mugen body kit from Japan. The full spoiler kit enhances the Jazz’s sharp lines to give it a more imposing stance and visual street cred. Finishing off the kit and blending with the silver exterior is the addition of clear Altezza style tail lights. The guys at Evolution-R also added a new suspension package to take it as low as the 18” MK16 wheels by MKW Wheels from Luxury Sports would allow. These enhancements converted the Jazz into a vehicle that really creates a statement on the road. However the Alpine team wanted more.
Over a one month process and a few collaborative creative sessions UCY Power Image delivered the goods with an insane graphics scheme incorporating a visual metamorphasis of lightning bolts, body panel stress cracks and the Alpine Type-R logo. The graphics are actually printed decals, which have the advantage of the design being able to be updated or removed at a later date. The result is an external styling package that looks loud, even while standing still.
The Jazz is a long way removed from it’s humble beginnings as a small hatchback. The system definitely creates an impact while still retaining that famous Alpine sound quality. The strong sound, combined with the extensive head turning internal and external modifications show that Alpine’s future is loud and clear!
