They are good for fixing up pretty soiled paintwork. A mate of mine used to park his car where it got a bit of paint overspray and the clay bar helps to remove it so it's good for that sort of thing.
If your paint is in reasonable condition then you shouldn't really need to use it. I have managed for years without the need for one, but I usually look after my paint from day one.
I have always found other ways around it and I have even had black cars and kept them in top condition without needing clay bars...it just takes time and a bit of effort.

what do you mean by soiled paintwork? How do you determine if paintwork is soiled or not?

Clay bars work GREAT !! I never heard about them until a few weeks ago and finally found one and it is fantastic the best investment in car care products I have made.
They are VERY EASY to use just keep the car wet with soapy water or spray that comes with clay bar and drag it over the surface like you are running your hand over the paint. It takes very little pressure just enough to keep the bar from falling out of your hand. You MUST WASH your car first and that takes care of all the grit that may scratch your paint.
The clay bar will not remove scratches or large defects but it gets rid of the small spots that you can see by looking at the paint at an angle that come from hard water or bird crap. I wash my car every third day and hand dry it but still get the spots and the clay bar gets rid of them in a heartbeat.
But remember the clay bar will remove your wax also so plan on waxing after. Even after washing the car and it looks clean you can see the goop building up on the clay bar that you couldn't even see, after you are done the paint surface is as smooth as a baby's butt.
If you want to save time just do the top surface of the car like the roof and hood as that is where most of the spots stick.
A SAFETY CAUTION if you drop the clay bar THROW IT AWAY as it picks up all the dirt and dust on the ground and you CAN"T get them out, keep the bar stored in it's plastic case until you are ready to work.
