from memory the type r oil was about $60 for 5L, so it was similar price to mobil 1 anyway, hence i always had used mobil 1 on the dc5r

some owners here uses 10w50, even 5w50......... as Ahcash has stated from the Honda dealer, their prefered oil is 10w30....... would this be enough reason for the dealer to refuse ur warranty claim? also..... can someone clearify what exactly does the numbers mean?? 10w30??? 10w50?? I know its relating to the thickness of the oil, that's all I know.... thanks .....

I have asked Honda Australia before and they clearly state the the same grade of oil needs to be used, hence 10w30. The oil has to be same quality if not better... please note that Honda FEO is semi syn. As explain by our papaya-san in one of the thread, Generally, thicker oil means higher viscosity and better protection at higher temperatures, and thinner oil means lower viscosity and better protection at lower temperatures (especially at startup). The multi in multi viscosity refers to an oil engineered to flow at the lower viscosity rating (eg.the 5 in 5w30) when cold, but perform at the higher viscosity rating (the 30 in 5w30) when hot. The w indicates that the oil is suitable for winter use

ykc8, Castrol Formula R is Synthetic GTX is not...(it could be semi.. I am not sure.. ). Some dealers here use Castrol GTX... and the minimal requirement from Honda is Semi.. so, I would assume the GTX is.. Even though the Castrol Formula R didn't say is FULLY synthetic.. I recall some members checked with Castrol and they have clarified that it is fully syn...

nick, better to stick to this thread from ausfit.proboards37.com/index.cgi?board=techtalks&action=display&thread=1127780265&page=3Easier for members to read if we stick to the topic.. I've asked one of the local dealer (parts department) and they've dun stock the TypeR oil in the parts department... they said the service department might have them... I am using Shell Helix Ultra Fully Syn at the moment.. On top of my head.. it is 5w40 they dun come cheap, around 40 - 60 bucks.... I know some of the guys here use Castrol R, Motul etc.. even Mobil 1. Depending if you want to spend extra for the sick of pampering your engine.. but I reckon the Original Honda FEO would be good enough for everyday running... I might ask them about their TypeR engine in my next service.. but if I were to change engine oil myself every 5000km and the parts department dun stock them.. I will run into problem, won't I??

If you are using synthetic, do not go back to semi. AFAIK, Type R oil is semi synth unless it's changed it's ingredients and I personally wouldn't even use semi synth on a shopping trolley.
Btw, Shell Helix Ultra is the cheapest around. It's not cheap when you consider Magnatec is about the high $20. I use Formula R 5W30 on the RAV4.. I will on the Jazz when it's got more k's on the clock.
Btw, GTX & GTX2 is pure mineral. GTX3 & Magnatec is semi.

I thought Castrol R is the cheapest... I could be wrong.
