it's not that expensive to start a business. i don't know about other states but in QLD, it costs around $180 to register a business name and u're ready to start.
but it's the other cost and responsibility and risk that is the biggest problem and i surely wouldn't wanna be in that role.

haha registering business name in vic is only $70.00
you don't need a company name just a business name and abn for .au domain names
getting abn's are free

ok, is $70 a once for all fee or it's an annual fee. in QLD, we have to renew every year.
so who will go to register a businese name and ABN? let's assume it will be the site admin. if u're registering as an individual, u have to summit your ABN application with your TFN. now assume the admin is a person who doesn't have one yet. is it a good idea to apply for a TFN just to make this works? if the admin has a TFN, do you think it's a good idea to have this be associated with his/her personal tax affairs.
now if the admin decided to charge membership fee to cover his costs, would any surplus money be regarded as income which is subject to tax? let's not bring GST into it as i assume we won't have membership fee in excess of $50k a year. given the admin is a normal person who has no idea how the Aussie tax system works, he would then have to consult an accountant for advise which would incur cost etc.........
do u see what i'm getting at?? the above may or may not actually happen but it's just too complicated and i don't see why we should get ourselves into this mess so that we can have a .au domain name.
i guess we can apply to be a non profit organisation but that's another matter with it's cost vs benefit to consider.
ps. post edited for spelling.

No lah .. for the time being.. we are only running a forum.. so, a domain name .com .org would be sufficient...
In a year or 2.. we will review.. HEHEHE.!!! and elect board of directors... ;D

hey just a thought i have my own company, already has abn, maybe i can just apply on behalf on the site? bob thanks for your offer but i think it wont work cos in order to register for a .au domain name, your business would need to have a connection to the proposed domain name. your business would needs a name of Jazz or Fit or have a products that is named Jazz or Fit etc for it to work. they do this to prevent people to register domain name to sell to big corp for highly inflated price.
